When asked what his prediction for the final score for Thursday's game versus Fridley was, Mahtomedi Zephyrs assistant coach Rob Garry replied, "8-0."
As it turns out, he wasn't too far off base, as the Zephyrs went on to take the Class 3A, Section 4 championship in CHS Field as junior pitcher Jack Schwietz tossed a complete game shutout and the Zephyrs won 5-0.
With a start time of 5:00, the game got off to a quick 3 up, 3 down inning by Schwietz in which he struck out two. The scoring began early for the Zephyrs as Trevor Moses got on base to start the bottom half of the first, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kyle Hinseth, and scored on a single by John Peterson.
Schwietz picked up two more strikeouts in the second to make it four in a row, but that would be it for the game thanks to two highly questionable calls from the umpire in the seventh following a 2-2 count, resulting in Schwietz's first walk allowed in five games.
The Zephyrs' other four runs came in the third on RBIs by Graham DeVore, Mitch Nordin, and Chuck Bartholomew. Nordin went 3-3 with two RBI, and Adam Stone and Kyle Hinseth also had a single apiece to make it seven hits for the Zephyrs.
Defensively, Trevor Moses flashed the leather repeatedly at short, making multiple outstanding plays to hold Fridley to four hits.
